Men's Sun Hats: The Complete Guide to UV Protection, Fit and Style

A good men's sun hat isn't a fashion statement — it's the most comfortable form of sun protection there is. No sticky sunscreen on your forehead, no burnt ears or neck, and you look sharp while you're at it. In this guide you'll learn why a UV protection hat makes sense for men, which styles suit your face shape, how the materials compare, and how to find the right size.

Why men need a UV protection sun hat

Men face a higher risk of skin cancer on the face, ears and scalp than women — especially with short hair or a thinning crown. A regular cap only shades your forehead; your ears, neck and cheeks take the full sun.

A proper sunhat with UPF50+ certification blocks at least 98% of UV radiation. (UPF is the textile equivalent of the SPF rating you know from sunscreen — read more in our guide What does UPF 50+ mean?) For comparison: a standard white T-shirt has a UPF of just 5 to 10. Every UPF50+ hat at Sunhats.eu is independently lab-tested in Australia and South Africa — countries that take sun protection seriously.

In short: a wide brim of 7–8 cm protects your face, ears and neck in one go. No cap can do that.

Which sun hat suits your face shape?

The right style depends on your face shape and how you'll wear it:

Fedora — the all-rounder. A 6–8 cm brim and a pinched crown that suits almost everyone. Round face? Go for a slightly taller crown. A hat for a square face works best with a softer, wider brim that balances strong jawlines.

Wide brim hat — maximum protection. Ideal for gardening, hiking, golf or a day at the beach. A brim of 8 cm or more gives the best coverage for your neck and ears.

Bucket hat — casual and practical. More compact and sportier, great for a relaxed look. The brim is shorter (5–6 cm), so slightly less coverage than a wide brim fedora.

Trilby — sharp for the city and the terrace. Short brim (±4.5 cm), smart silhouette. Note: not every trilby is UPF-certified — choose deliberately if sun protection is your main goal.

Materials compared: Flexibraid®, technical polyester and paper straw

Flexibraid® is the proprietary, registered material from House of Ord - Cape Town: polyester fibres woven into a braid and stitched into a hat. The benefits: crushable and packable (flatten it in your suitcase, done), hand washable, colourfast, lightweight and UPF50+. The trade-off: slightly less of a natural straw-hat look. The go-to travel hat for golf and everyday wear.

Technical polyester (as used in the Explorer) is the outdoor choice: lightweight, crushable, water-repellent and UPF50+. Hand washable and virtually indestructible. The trade-off: a sportier look, less suited to smart outfits. The pick for hiking, fishing and active holidays.

Paper straw sits in between: lightweight, affordable and with a natural straw look. Many paper straw models are UPF50+ certified, but they're not foldable — so don't bury this hat at the bottom of your bag.

Material UV protection Travel-friendly Washable Price range
Flexibraid® UPF50+ Crushable & packable Hand wash €60–75
Technical polyester UPF50+ Crushable, water-repellent Hand wash €55–60

Hat size guide: how to measure your head

  1. Grab a tape measure (or a piece of string and a ruler).
  2. Measure around your head, about 1 cm above your ears and eyebrows — where the hat will sit.
  3. Don't pull too tight; the hat should be comfortable, not constricting.
Head circumference Hat size
56–57 cm S/M – M/L
58–59 cm M/L – L/XL
60–61 cm L/XL
62–63 cm XL (selected models, incl. Pana-Mate)

Between two sizes? Choose the larger one: nearly all our hats have an internal drawstring or toggle that lets you adjust the fit down by about 2 cm — see our full size guide. And if it still doesn't fit, you have 45 days to return it.
